When William I, the French Duke of Normandy, conquered England in 1066, English went into a decline, becoming the language of serfs. French became the language of government and culture and remained so until English-speaking kings took over parts of France and English resurfaced. As a result, the French language contains thousands of words that are almost identical in English but are generally unrecognizable when spoken rapidly in French. When a change of accent and/or spelling is recognized and approximated, English-speakers can use these thousands of shared words.* It is with translation that different cultures and societies have learned about each other and it is through translation that nations are being introduced to ideas that consequently help them modernize and advance.
