DIVAS EDGARDO GAZCÓN When an actress or singer is labeled a star, it is most assuredly because they have hurdled over the barriers to success. But when the term "diva" starts to stick, it is surely because the success of that actress or singer has gone beyond fame. The term "diva" comes from a famous opera singer who drove audiences wild with her voice, while at the same time driving her assistants mad with her self-important behavior. From that time forward "diva" has been the perfect adjective for some celebrities. Not all of those are divas, although there are many beautiful ones out there. Since the term has often been misinterpreted, it should be noted that today's divas are not necessarily ill-tempered or conceited. Divas possess a perfect knowledge of their craft and know how to use it so deftly that no person or obstacle can keep them from reaching their goal. Being a diva means having extremely strong self-esteem and professional self-confidence. She knows she is adored by the public. She knows that she has reached a level where she is as one of the world's prized jewels. It is curious to note that even the dictionary defines "diva" as a synonym for goddess. The Spanish-speaking artistic community has contributed a significant number of divas. |
